The Wolfsburg Planetarium and ZEISS have a long history together. In 1978, Volkswagen AG acquired, among other things, a ZEISS SPACEMASTER planetarium projector from Jena in return for the delivery of Golf brand cars to the GDR and donated it to the city of Wolfsburg. The ZEISS planetarium from the East opened in western Wolfsburg in 1983. When the planetarium received its new STARMASTER star projector – the first of this model series – from Jena in 1996, ZEISS East and West had long since been reunited. In 2010, the first VELVET projectors from ZEISS for fulldome projection moved into the 15-m dome. They were replaced by the modern generation with LED light sources in 2023.
