SEM- ECCI observation of nano indentation in a bulk TWIP steel sample

SMART Microscopy - Combing Biology, Scripting, and AI

Free online webinar
  • How to observe extended crystal lattice defects like dislocations and stacking faults in bulk samples with a SEM.
  • The basic principle of contrast formation, and how electrons channel into a crystal lattice when the incident beam hits the lattice along the Bragg angle.
  • What is required for a methodical workflow involving a suitable scanning electron microscope with optimal beam conditions coupled with a sophisticated crystallographic analysis software.

SMART Microscopy - Combing Biology, Scripting, and AI
Electron channelling contrast image (ECCI)

Smart Microscopy is changing how we acquire images by combining microscopy, image analysis, and computational workflows to make experiments more intelligent to increase efficiency and reproducibility. In this webinar, we will introduce the key concepts behind Smart Microscopy and demonstrate how ZEISS ZEN software can be used to automate imaging decisions, from the no-code Guided Acquisition workflow to advanced scripted applications using the ZEN API.
We are pleased to welcome guest speakers Dr. Lucien Hinderling and Dr. Alfredo Rates, who will share their perspectives and practical experiences with Smart Microscopy in research. Alfredo will discuss how to implement Smart Microscopy in an imaging facility and Lucien will present his approach to building vendor-agnostic workflows.

Webinar Speaker

Dr. Soren Prag

With a research background spanning Copenhagen, London, and Lisbon, Soren specialized in cancer cell migration and advanced microscopy techniques before joining ZEISS in 2012, where he focuses on Automation including Spatial Biology, High-Content Screening, and SMART Microscopy

Dr. Philipp Seidel

A Life Scientist by training working on DNA-damage response signalling in cancer and other diseases in Heidelberg, Lisbon and Freiburg. Joined ZEISS 7 years ago to support Life Sciences software and application development including High-Content Screening, and SMART Microscopy.

Dr. Fabian Zwettler

Fabian Zwettler has a background in advanced fluorescence and super-resolution microscopy, with significant research contributions in expansion microscopy and single-molecule localization microscopy. At ZEISS Research Microscopy Solutions, he focuses on enabling cutting-edge imaging workflows and helping researchers unlock new biological insights through innovative microscopy technologies.

Dr. Lucien Hindeling

As a cell biologist with a background in computer science, for his PhD Lucien built real-time feedback control microscopy workflows. With the Smart Microscopy Working Group, he works on interoperability of such systems. Currently, Lucien explores using AI to translate natural-language commands into microscope hardware control and even letting AI run experiments itself, moving microscopy from automation toward autonomy.

Dr. Alfredo Rates

Alfredo works on Smart Microscopy for cell biology, applying his expertise in photonics and automation to develop automated imaging and intervention tools. Alfredo is currently a postdoc at Utrecht University in the Netherlands, working with optogenetic tools to control cell behavior  on demand.
