细胞病理学或细胞学旨在通过研究单细胞和细胞结构来检测细胞水平的疾病。这门病理学学科由希腊医学先驱George Papanicolaou于1928年创立,他还发明了“子宫颈抹片检查”。这种抹片检查现在常用于细胞病理学研究,来自身体不同部位的临床样品散布并沉积在显微镜玻片上,形成一层细胞薄膜,用于随后的染色和光学显微镜检查。

良好区分细胞和确保细胞核细节清晰可见是细胞学诊断癌细胞和肿瘤细胞的绝对先决条件。细胞学家和病理学家依赖于其样品在明场、相差、DIC或荧光中具有高色彩保真度的清晰图像。巴氏染色(PAP染色)、吉姆萨染色或罗曼诺夫斯基染色等细胞学染色会对细胞特征进行特异性染色,而显微镜的光学质量、随附用于数字记录的相机的保真度以及设备的人体工程学设计则可以在筛查患者样本时发挥重要作用。
