New Plug-ins for Video Editing with ZEISS eXtended Data

ZEISS lens data can now be used with the most popular video editing programs

To coincide with NAB Show 2018 in Las Vegas, ZEISS is unveiling software plug-ins for standard video editing programs. “After launching the plug-in for Da Vinci Resolve in 2017, users of Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe After Effects and Nuke can now use our lens metadata technology ZEISS eXtended Data in post-production,” says Christophe Casenave from ZEISS. Starting in May, the plug-ins will be available to download for free from the ZEISS website: www.zeiss.com/cine/xd-plugin

Visual effects in a flash

Last year, ZEISS launched the ZEISS CP.3 XD full-frame lens range. What’s special about it? The lenses feature ZEISS eXtended Data – a metadata technology that saves the lens distortion and shading for every single frame. What’s more, all Cooke /i-Technologie1 metadata is recorded, such as focus distance, aperture value and depth of focus.

The metadata make it easier to work with visual effects: it takes just a few clicks to modify the image generated on the computer to fit the lens characteristics, and to then splice it together with the footage to create a realistic image. Previously, all data had to be measured by hand to be able to correct it in post-production. ZEISS eXtended Data makes this a thing of the past. “We have simplified the workflow tremendously,” says Casenave. “Production companies now save both time and money – particularly when it comes to small productions.”

Simplified workflow – from shooting to the finished film

To enable as many users as possible to take advantage of all the benefits, ZEISS has developed the plug-ins for the most popular video editing programs: “Our aim is to simplify the entire production process, from shooting to the finished film. That’s why we’re working with our partners in the film industry to come up with solutions that can be used to even greater effect with ZEISS eXtended Data in the entire film production ecosystem.” By the end of 2018, cameras made by RED will be able to store ZEISS metadata in the camera itself. Those who prefer to work with models from other manufacturers can use the external recording device MasterLockit Plus. In the future, the pro monitor StarliteHD evolution from Transvideo will even be able to store ZEISS metadata on an SD card.
