- La metástasis ósea en pacientes con cáncer sistémico se manifiesta con frecuencia en la columna vertebral. La supervivencia general media de los pacientes con metástasis ósea es de tan solo 7-9 meses1, aunque algunos de estos pacientes (con entidades primarias que responden al tratamiento sistémico) pueden sobrevivir más de una década.
- A fin de estabilizar y esterilizar al instante los cuerpos vertebrales afectados, el uso de la combinación de cifoplastia y radioterapia intraoperatoria (cifo-RIO) proporciona una opción de tratamiento local prometedora como alternativa al tratamiento de referencia, la radioterapia de haz externo (EBRT, por sus siglas en inglés).
- En esta evaluación de los resultados a largo plazo se evalúa la cohorte de pacientes más grande que existe actualmente, compuesta por 104 pacientes, a los que se trató con cifo-RIO entre 2009 y 2019.
