Smart information. Safer driving

Elevate safety and the digital experience through integrated windshield display systems

Modern mobility environments demand immediate access to relevant driving information without increasing driver distraction or cockpit complexity. Drivers must be able to receive navigation guidance, safety alerts, and vehicle data while keeping their focus on the road.

The windshield becomes more than a physical barrier. It evolves into an intelligent interface between drivers, vehicles, and their surroundings. Critical information such as speed, navigation, and alerts appears directly within the driver’s natural line of sight, while passenger content can be integrated seamlessly without additional hardware or design compromises.

ZEISS Microoptics develops precision-engineered optical systems for windshield displays that integrate digital information directly into transparent surfaces. Built on ZEISS ProSight®, our scalable holographic technology platform, these systems support compact integration and stable visual performance across varying lighting and environmental conditions.

  • Ultra-large, high-transparency display:

    >92% HOE transmittance; more flexible sizing vs. PHUD

  • High design freedom:

<1.5l compact package; flexible PGU placement; adaptable to curved surfaces

  • High brightness & clarity:

    >10,000 Nits luminance (visible in direct sunlight); RGB display

  • Scalable display performance:

Support 4K resolution and even beyond, as PGU technology evolves

  • Enhanced safety, comfort and privacy:

In-line-of-sight display; flexible eyebox design for distraction control & visibility; dual eyebox capability for shared content

  • Higher efficiency:

Improved light efficiency and reduced system weight

ZEISS ProSight® architecture for windshield displays

System-level optical integration for next-generation mobility platforms

Windshield display performance is defined by system architecture rather than projection alone. Modern mobility platforms require solutions that deliver clear visual guidance while preserving design flexibility, optical stability, and seamless integration into the vehicle structure.

ZEISS Microoptics develops complete windshield display systems designed for integration directly into transparent vehicle surfaces. This architecture allows critical driving information to appear within the driver’s natural field of view while maintaining compact system dimensions and minimal visual intrusion within the vehicle interior.

Powered by ZEISS ProSight®, the system uses an optical functional layer with micro-optical structures that control light with high efficiency and stability. The optical functional layer supports flexible positioning of the Picture Generation Unit (PGU) while maintaining consistent image quality across different windshield geometries.

The scalable optical architecture ensures reliable driver visibility while supporting multiple eyeboxes for differentiated content zones across the vehicle interior. The system projects a stable in-plane image directly onto the windshield surface, minimizing distortion and preserving image clarity across varying lighting and driving conditions.

Replication technologies support scalable production across different windshield geometries and vehicle platforms while maintaining consistent optical quality for large-scale mobility programs.

Frequently asked questions on windshield displays

  • Each package requires less than 1.5 liters of installation volume, making the solution suitable even for compact cockpits.

  • Yes. Each viewing zone can display unique content, invisible to others.

  • Image brightness primarily depends on the projector and system brightness. With high brightness levels, content remains clearly visible even in direct sunlight

  • We are flexible in positioning it, including the dashboard, A-pillar, or other locations. This enables seamless integration with various vehicle architectures.
