The newly created “ZEISS Extended Reality” together with ZEISS Vision Care now makes up the ZEISS Consumer Markets segment.

The market for extended reality (XR) products (virtual, mixed, & augmented reality) is growing rapidly. And there is a simple truth: Consumers using smart glasses for extended reality need excellent vision to enjoy the full experience. At ZEISS, committed teams have been working for almost a decade on products and technologies to enable people with visual impairments to fully enjoy extended reality products.

These teams will now be combined and managed as one strategic business - ZEISS Extended Reality to deliver high-quality XR vision correction, optical systems and end-to-end integration capabilities to its partners.

Two heritages, one goal: Refractive solutions for the full XR experience

tooz, formerly a joint venture with Deutsche Telekom but since 2023 a 100% ZEISS venture, is developing optical solutions and reference designs for see-through AR devices. Since the start in 2015, it has had a strong focus on integrating prescription solutions into AR optics in a way that is compatible with ophthalmic mass production processes and capabilities.

The teams at ZEISS Vision Care with their experience in managing large projects with big key accounts, and their strong know-how in operations and mass manufacturing have already been in close collaboration with the tooz colleagues in the past.

In the future, ZEISS will fully leverage the competences from both areas in the new ZEISS Extended Reality strategic business unit, at exactly the right place, to enable consumer electronics customers with products that opens the XR market to all consumers with vision correction needs.

Product portfolio to enable consumer electronic brands

It is in ZEISS‘ DNA to challenge the limits of imagination from the infinitely small to the infinitely large. For almost 180 years ZEISS has been at the forefront of optical innovations – now also for seeing beyond and extending our perceivable reality. The product portfolio of ZEISS Extended Reality ranges from (sorted by level of complexity):

  • Ophthalmic Lenses for AI non-display glasses
  • Curved Waveguides offering vision correction and further customization potential for AR glasses
  • Push/Pull stack complementing AR display glasses with vision correction
  • Optical Inserts for VR/MR headsets

Both strategic business units, ZEISS Extended Reality and ZEISS Vision Care, are committed to protecting and improving vision and visual experiences for the individual wearer. To uphold that commitment, eye care professionals will also play an important role within the ZEISS Extended Reality business in the future.
